Introduction
This
information has been compiled to ensure the correct and safe use of
SUPASET™
brake lining rivets. It includes procedures for setting machine
calibration and the correct rivet selection for SUPASET™
riveting. These are essential for the correct use of SUPASET™
brake lining rivets.
If you have any queries or questions regarding this information
please contact Ariel Fasteners for
advice.
SUPASET™
Rivet Selection Using The “Free Tube Length Gauge”
The
“Free Tube Length Gauge” can be used for the correct rivet length
selection of 5mm, 6mm, 6.35mm, 8mm and 10mm diameter Supaset™
rivets.
| 1 |
Select
the Supaset™
rivet and pre-assemble into the brake shoe assembly ensuring that
the rivet head is firmly in contact with the lining as shown in the
diagram below. |
| 2 |
Select
the end of the Free Tube Length Gauge which corresponds to the rivet
diameter selected. Place this alongside the protruding Free Tube of
the rivet on the underside of the Brake Shoe, as shown in the
diagram below. Note:
For 6.35mm(1/4”) diameter, use the 6mm specified limits. |
| 3 |
Ensuring
that your line of sight is level with the end of the rivet, check
that the end of the rivet is within the Free Tube Length Limits
marked on the Free Tube Length Gauge, as shown in the diagram below. |

Above Example Shows An 8mm
Diameter Rivet
If
the rivet is within the limits specified, then a suitable Supaset™
rivet has been selected. If the rivet is outside of the limits specified
then repeat the above procedure with a slightly longer or shorter Supaset™
rivet as required. If
a ‘Free Tube Length gauge’ is not available, a standard ruler can be
used with the measurements listed below.

Machine
Calibration Procedure
To
ensure that the Rivet Setting machine has been correctly set to apply
SUPASET™
FULL-ROLL rivets, a calibration procedure has been developed which
utilises test pieces which will shear at the correct setting force for
each of the rivet types listed.
The
aim of the procedure is to shear the relevant Test Piece when the setting
machine performs a single setting cycle.
|
For the 5mm diameter
rivets use Test Piece no. 5 which shears at 16kN
|
|
For the 6mm & ¼”
gauge diameter rivets use Test Piece no.6 which shears at 20kN
|
|
For the 8mm diameter
rivets use Test Piece no. 8 which shears at 26kN
|
|
For the 10mm diameter
rivets use Test Piece no. 10 which shears at 30kN
|
Calibration Procedure video is available in the downloads
section
|
Step 1
|
Using the
existing setting tools for the diameter of rivet to be set, cycle
the machine down to its full extent. Adjust the tooling height to
ensure that the gap between the setting tools is no more than 3mm.
This ensures that the machine will have enough stroke to set the
rivet correctly.
|
|
Step 2
|
Remove the
setting tools from the machine and set the setting force to zero.
|
|
Step 3
|
Install the
calibration tooling as shown, selecting the test piece to suit the
application.
·
Take the machine through it’s setting cycle and if the test piece
does not shear, increase
the setting pressure slightly and cycle the machine again.
·
Repeat the setting cycle , increasing the setting pressure each time
until the Test Piece shears.
·
Continue with this process, replacing any sheared test pieces with
new ones, Until a new Test Piece will shear when the machine
performs a single setting cycle. When this occurs the setting
machine is producing sufficient force for SUPASET FULL-ROLL
riveting.
|
|
Step 4
|
To complete the
machine calibration, repeat the above procedure for each of the
rivet diameters to be set. The BAR pressure reached on the pressure
gauge to shear the test piece for each of the sizes can then be
marked as the pressure required for the relevant diameter rivets.
|
|
Step 5
|
Remove the Calibration Tooling and install the
SUPASET tooling to commence SUPASET FULL-ROLL riveting. It must be
ensured that the Setting Tool has sufficient travel to set the rivet
correctly upon completion of the calibration procedure. Adjust the
tooling in the Lower Machine Arm as necessary. Periodic checking is
strongly recommended to ensure that the correct setting force is
maintained.
|
Safety Note:
The Shear Punch is
supplied with a sleeve secured on one end. This should be left in place
during the calibration procedure. The purpose of the sleeve is to protect
the operator from breakage and fragment ejection in the unlikely event
that the Shear Punch is subjected to forces greater than specified, or
that the mounting of the assembly in the machine is not correct and
breakage occurs. If the Sleeve becomes detached, do not use and contact
Ariel Fasteners and we will exchange the item.
